IFBB Pro Physique Competitor Krista Dunn Photoshoot
So here goes! First ever blog post. So now what? “Hey Google, what are some successful tips for writing a blog post?”. Google tips: Understand your audience, Use bullet points
– Add images.
– Write for yourself first.
– Love your existing audience. (Love you Mom!)
Ok well, I’m not shy to the idea of “just get started” since that’s exactly how I started doing photography. I stumbled through camera settings and spent endless hours figuring out Photoshop. Surely I’m capable of writing my first blog! First thing that comes to mind is my current situation. I’m in the midst of turning my garage into a photography studio. The studio I’ve been shooting at closed this year and I took it as an opportunity to really think about what type of environment I want to shoot in. Right now my heart is moving me in the direction of conceptual photography. I like the theatrical, colorful, fun, meaningful, and sometimes outrageous. One of my favorite photographers is David Lachapelle. His work is a feast for the eyes. Many of his images involve props, detail and complexity. There is an intent in his work that I respect and strive to have others see in my own.
My first ever concept photoshoot I shot was with my friend Krista Dunn. She has competed as an IFBB Pro for many years and I wanted to highlight her accomplishments. I think she is one of the hardest working competitors I know. I can’t even count how many competitions she’s done. Luckily, She has also had many photoshoots throughout her career. My goal was to create a culminating image of her entire career as a bodybuilder utilizing those photos. SOOO MUCH KRISTA!! Concept Shoot with Krista Dunn IFBB Pro
The initial prep was to have her send me her pics. Then I had them all printed out poster size and taped up on the wall as a background. Not cheap! But, I was determined to get this image from my mind onto the camera. I was pleased with how it turned out. It’s not an overly complicated set up but has a lot of meaning that I hope the viewers realize. Her physique is incredible and the image not only shows you what she looks like now, but how far she’s come and what a career she’s had. Shooting Krista, who is such an inspiration to me personally, in front of all the images that have inspired others made this shoot so fulfilling.

So back to my garage and my thought on why I’m turning it into my studio. To create these concept shoots takes a lot of planning and I know I need complete control of the environment. I want to get messy and play around with color, light, style, props, backdrops, etc. Yes, I shoot fitness, but fitness doesn’t have to just be in the gym or out running and doing yoga. I want the fitness physique to be considered just as fashionable and artistic as the skinny models in Vogue. I hope this is the start of something incredible. In the next few months I will be putting together concept shoots to shoot my fitness gals. It’s not the usual thing in the fitness world but hopefully it will appeal to some. Stay tuned because I will be blogging my shoots and concept development along the way. Cheers!
